The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) – the exchange where a large share of India’s daily equity trading takes place – is coming out with its own Initial Public Offering (IPO). Given NSE’s role in the Indian capital markets, this IPO has drawn wide public and media attention.
This article explains, in simple steps, how an investor can apply for the NSE IPO – the documentation needed, the application process via UPI or ASBA, and how to submit an application through GCL Broking’s platform. It is meant purely as a procedural, educational guide.

Who Can Apply for the NSE IPO?
As per SEBI’s IPO framework, applicants are generally classified into the following categories, each with its own investment limits and allotment process:
- Retail Individual Investors (RII): Investments up to ₹2 lakh
- Non-Institutional Investors (NII / HNI): Investments above ₹2 lakh
- Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB): Banks, mutual funds, and other large institutions
Eligibility, category-wise reservation, and allotment methodology (including the lottery-based process for oversubscribed retail applications) are governed by SEBI’s ICDR Regulations and are detailed in the IPO’s RHP.
Documents and Prerequisites
To apply for any SEBI-regulated IPO, an investor typically needs:
- An active Demat and Trading account with a SEBI-registered stockbroker or bank
- A PAN card linked to the Demat account (mandatory as per SEBI norms)
- A bank account with sufficient balance for the application amount
- A UPI ID linked to that bank account (if applying via the UPI route)
A Demat account is a regulatory requirement for IPO applications in India – without one, an application cannot be submitted.
How to Apply for the NSE IPO: Step-by-Step
SEBI permits two payment mechanisms for retail IPO applications: UPI (through a broker’s platform) and ASBA (through net banking). Both routes are equally valid under SEBI’s framework, and the choice between them is entirely at the applicant’s discretion.
How to Apply via GCL Broking
Investors who hold a Demat and trading account with GCL Broking can submit their NSE IPO application through the following steps:
- Log in to your GCL Broking account on the trading app or web platform using your registered credentials.
- Navigate to the E-IPO / IPO Listing available on the dashboard.
- From the list of currently open issues, locate “National Stock Exchange of India Ltd.” and select Apply.
- Enter the quantity in multiples of the lot size (8 shares per lot) and select a price within the ₹1,700–₹1,785 band, or choose the “Cut-off price” option if preferred by the applicant.
- Enter your UPI ID linked to your bank account and review the application details for accuracy.
- Click Submit. GCL Broking forwards the application to the exchange’s bidding platform on the investor’s behalf.
- A payment mandate request will appear on your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, or your bank’s app). Review the amount and approve it before the daily cut-off time, generally 5:00 PM on the issue closing date.
Once approved, the application amount is blocked (not debited) in the investor’s bank account until the allotment process is completed. If shares are not allotted, the block is released as per the exchange’s timeline – this is a standard SEBI-mandated process and applies uniformly across brokers.
Applying via ASBA (Alternative Route)
Investors who prefer to apply directly through their bank rather than a broker’s platform can use the ASBA facility:
- Log in to your bank’s net banking portal.
- Navigate to the ASBA / IPO Application section.
- Select the NSE IPO, enter the quantity and price (or cut-off option).
- Submit the application – the bank blocks the corresponding amount in the applicant’s account until the allotment process concludes.
Understanding the Lot Size and Application Amount
The NSE IPO has a lot size of 8 shares. The table below illustrates how the application amount scales with the number of lots, at the upper end of the price band:
| Application Type | Lots | Shares | Approx. Amount |
| Retail (Minimum) | 1 | 8 | ₹14,280 |
| Retail (Maximum) | 14 | 112 | ₹1,99,920 |
| Small HNI (Minimum) | 15 | 120 | ₹2,14,200 |
Retail applications are capped at a total investment of ₹2 lakh, as per SEBI’s classification norms.
What Happens After Submitting an Application
Once the IPO subscription period closes, the process generally follows these stages, as prescribed by SEBI and the registrar to the issue:
- Allotment is finalised by the registrar, based on subscription levels in each category (a lottery-based process applies for oversubscribed retail applications).
- Unblocking/refund of amounts occurs for applicants who did not receive full allotment.
- Shares are credited to the Demat accounts of successful applicants.
- Listing takes place on the proposed exchange, after which the shares become available for trading.
Allotment status can be checked directly on the registrar’s website or through the IPO section of a broker’s platform, once the basis of allotment is officially published.
